CES Highlights

Here's a small run-down of the Las Vegas CES show highlights:

A Segway Clone
Sony's Humanoid Robot
"Invisible" Speakers

What is CES? It stands for "Consumer Electronics Show". It's a trade-only expo that brings together the world's electronics manufacturers, retailers and the media, in much the same way that "E3" (Electronic Entertainment Expo) does for the video and computer game industry. (In fact, before E3 started some time around 1995, game publishers would show off their goods bi-annually at CES!)

Interesting tidbit: I attended my first CES in Las Vegas, in 1991. The highlight of the show (asides from getting to see hundreds of Nintendo NES games before anyone else) was my first glimpse of HDTV. It was AMAZING. I'm not even sure that the resolution I saw then is the same as what they now sell in stores. I recall being at the Toshiba booth and they had a rather large screen up on a wall, with some nature footage of elephants playing. The impression I came away with was that "it's like I'm looking through a window at real elephants!" That was 13 years ago. Look at how long it's taken for HDTV to go from being shown at CES, to appearing in homes, and I don't think the quality is as high as what I saw then.
