Armadillo's Still At It 

John Carmack's aerospace efforts are still ongoing, despite missing the X-Prize competition. Personally, it sounds to me like they are doing a lot of trial and error, trial and error, ... and more trial and error. I'm not sure they'll ever get off the ground. Even their mock rendering looks rickety. "Flying in a tin can"
