Nvidia's 2003 Retro Game Remake Competition 

I hadn't heard of this competition before, so here I am posting slightly old news. In 2003 Nvidia and Dark BASIC sponsored a competition where the entrants had to remake classic video games into 3D variants. There's some interesting entries, if you dig deep enough.
